CGG Partners AVPN to Organise Sessions on Effective Government Partnerships in Bali

Bali, Nusa Dua (Indonesia), 24 June 2022 – The Chandler Governance Group (CGG) partnered the Asian Venture Philanthropy Network (AVPN) to organise a governance track at the AVPN Global Conference 2022 held in Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia last week. AVPN is the largest platform and networking organisation for social investment in Asia. The Global Conference 2022 is an official side event for the G20 Summit 2022 in support of Indonesia’s G20 Presidency.
The Conference was well attended by over 1000 participants, including social impact investors, government officials, business leaders, and non-government organisations from all around the world. The event was headlined by H.E.Sandiaga Uno, Minister for Tourism and Creative Economy, Indonesia, and also featured keynote speakers from the Rockefeller Foundation, Tanoto Foundation, and Temasek Trust.
CGG believes that non-profit organisations and social investors have the power to effectively mobilise resources to achieve impact by developing government capabilities. We partnered with AVPN to organise a plenary and a workshop as part of the inaugural governance track at the AVPN conference.
On the first day of the conference (21 June 2022), CGG hosted a plenary which explored why good national governance matters and the role of philanthropists and funding partners in supporting good national governance. CGG’s Executive Director, Wu Wei Neng, spoke about how effective governance is key to solving the world’s most complex challenges today. He explained how good governments foster an environment of trust, which is critical to the development of prosperous, creative and inclusive nations.
CGG was joined by Poornima Dore, Director, Analytics, Insight &Impact, Tata Trusts; Beverly Ho, Director, Department of Health (Philippines); and Torplus Yomnak, Assistant Professor and Director of Political Economics Studies Centre, Chulalongkorn University.
The panel also emphasised that effective national and local governance are key to solving the world’s most complex challenges, the importance of developing government capabilities and skills at all levels of seniority, and that harnessing data analytics and digital technology can help governments make better choices.
On Day 2 of the conference, CGG conducted a workshop in a human library format to discuss key considerations and practical models for social investors to work well with governments to develop capabilities.
Our speakers, or human “books”, were: Shobhini Mukerji, Executive Director, J-PAL South Asia, Beverly Ho, Director, Department of Health (Philippines), Rajiv Lall, Professorial Research Fellow, Singapore Green Finance Centre, Singapore Management University, Aya Ono, Impact Investment Lead, ASEAN-Japan Centre, and Murugan Vasudevan, CEO, Veddis Foundation.
In small groups, our speakers shared stories from their challenges and successes working with governments. The discussions surfaced key underlying principles for effective partnerships, such as the importance of using evidence when making a case, and how to focus on implementation, not just ideas and strategies. Our speakers were also unanimous in their belief in swimming downstream, not upstream, when building effective partnerships. They spoke about how it was critical to ride on larger national strategic thrusts to truly achieve impact, rather than championing independent causes in isolation.
During the Conference, CGG met with business leaders, philanthropists and social impact organisations such as STiR Education, Schmidt Futures and Veddis Foundation to share our experience working with governments, discuss new ways to partner with governments, as well as potential areas for collaboration.
